Candy Carmel-Gilfilen engages in creative, interdisciplinary projects and research in partnership with market leaders celebrating a commitment to evidence-based design. This innovative work was recognized in 2012 as she received the Interior Design Educators Council (IDEC) Teaching Excellence Award. Professor Carmel-Gilfilen’s scholarly work is defined by interdisciplinary aspects that transverse design pedagogy and student development, healthcare design, and retail security design. Her work has been published in the Journal of Interior Design, Design Studies, and Security Journal, as well as presented nationally and internationally. A recent project funded by Herman Miller explored innovation by empathetic design outpatient healthcare facilities. Together with Dr. Margaret Portillo, this work received the IDEC Award of Excellence in 2014 for the Best Presentation for the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning.

Candy is NCIDQ certified, EDAC certified, and a LEED accredited professional who has practiced professionally in Ohio, Michigan, and Florida with focus on educational, corporate, and healthcare design. She currently serves as the Interior Design Undergraduate Coordinator and directs the Design Field Experience Program. In addition, Candy oversees the department’s exchange and study abroad programs with the Hochschule Ostwestfalen-Lippe in Detmold, Germany and the University of Indonesia in Jakarta, Indonesia.
